Hua Hin is de oudste badplaats van Thailand en gelegen op de westoever van de Golf van Thailand. Deze plaats is zeer geliefd bij de Thaise bevolking, die dan ook gedurende het weekend de stranden vullen maar door de weeks wegblijven. Hua Hin is een aanrader voor rustzoekers, die geen bruisend uitgaansleven zoals in Pattaya willen. Zij kunnen zich hier ontspannen op een kilometers lang zandstrand met een tropische achtergrond. Het strand van Hua Hin is 5 km lang. Tevens kunt u hier genieten van de fraaie natuurparken die Hua Hin’s omgeving bepalen en volop de lokale sfeer in het stadje Hua Hin proeven.Het treinstation van Hua Hin is wereldberoemd. Toen in 1920 de spoorverbinding met Bangkok werd geopend bouwde de Thaise spoorwegen het koloniale Railway Hotel. Ook werd toen de eerste openbare Golf Course geopend. In 1926 liet de toenmalige Koning Rama VII het Klai Kangwon Paleis bouwen op een paar kilometer afstand van het Railway Hotel. Vandaag de dag wordt dit paleis nog regelmatig gebruikt door de Koninklijke Familie. De afstand vanuit Bangkok naar Hua Hin bedraagt ongeveer 192 km. U kunt Hua Hin bereiken over de weg, per trein en zelfs per vliegtuig vanuit Bangkok.Per auto of bus duurt de rit iets minder dan 3 uur. Vanuit de Sai Dtai Southern Bus terminal gaan dagelijks om het uur airconditioned bussen naar HuaHin. Tevens gaan er dagelijks diverse treinen vanuit Bangkok naar Hua Hin. Via de haven wordt dagelijks verse vis aangeleverd. Er bevinden zich vele seafoodrestaurants in Hua Hin. Uiteraard zijn er ook vele andere mogelijkheden om uit eten te gaan, van pizza en pasta´s, kip tandoori tot vleesproducten van de internationale menukaart. Probeer ook eens de grote variatie aan vers fruit en kanoms (Thaise zoetigheid)Hua Hin is niet zo groot, zodat u uren kunt rondwandelen zonder afhankelijk te zijn van vervoersmiddelen. KHAO SOI

Tijdens de trips door het noorden van Thailand maken we altijd plaats en tijd voor ons favoriete gerecht van ChiangMai, namelijk KHAO SOI.


Khao Soi
Yeah, that’s right: khao soi. Those of you not prepared to go one-on-one with the deliciousliest Thai dish of all should probably leave. OK. Now we’re alone, and I can let you in on a secret: khao soi is not even Thai. This famous northern speciality is probably an amalgam of Burmese/Shan and Chinese-Muslim cooking styles. The word khao soi, which doesn’t really mean anything in Thai, probably comes from the Burmese khauk-hswe, which means simply “noodles”. Unlike most Thai noodle dishes, the broth is made with coconut milk, very similar to a dish still eaten today in Shan State Burma called ohn no khauk-hswe. It seems likely that Chinese-Muslim traders brought ohn no khauk-hswe to Thailand, and added the spices they were so fond of.

OK, enough freaking history. Now it’s time to face the khao soi:Don’t try to deny its power, look at it, stare at it, let it take you in:Khao soi uses flat egg noodles, some of which are deep-fried and used as a topping. To cut through the general oiliness of the dish, khao soi is accompanied by a dish of acidic condiments such as sliced shallots, slices of lime, and pickled cabbage, as seen below:
The bowl above was consumed at Khao Soi Lam Duan in Chiang Mai, probably the best and most famous khao soi place in Thailand. The owner claims that her mother actually invented the dish, but this seems very unlikely. Unlike most Thai dishes, khao soi is usually only served with chicken or beef, which also seems to verify its Muslim origins.

Amsterdam (AP) - Meer dan duizend nieuwe diersoorten zijn de afgelopen tien jaar
ontdekt in het stroomgebied van de Mekong in Zuidoost-Azië. Dat blijkt uit een nieuw
rapport dat het Wereld Natuur Fonds (WNF) vandaag lanceert. Met een
Wonderen-campagne vraagt het WNF momenteel aandacht voor dit soort bijzondere,
maar kwetsbare natuur. Het rapport First contact in the greater Mekong (Eerste
ontmoetingen in het stroomgebied van de Mekong) beschrijft de ontdekking van 1068
diersoorten tussen 1997 en 2007. Het gaat bijvoorbeeld om een nieuw soort Huntsman-spin,
die een doorsnee van maar liefst 30 centimeter heeft. Of om een felroze duizendpoot die
het gif cyanide produceert. Deze wonderbaarlijke dieren werden vooral aangetroffen in
ongerepte natuurgebieden. Maar soms werd een ontdekking gedaan op een verrassende
plaats. Zo glibberde een zeer zeldzame adder rond in een restaurant in Thailand. Een hele
nieuwe zoogdiersoort, de Laotiaanse rotsrat, troffen wetenschappers aan in een kooitje op een
plaatselijke markt. De ontdekking van een nieuwe zoogdierfamilie is bijzonder, want komt
zelden voor. De laatste keer dat dat gebeurde was in 1974. De nieuwe soorten die in het
rapport zijn beschreven, zijn 519 planten, 279 vissen, 88 kikkers, 88 spinnen, 46 hagedissen,
22 slangen, 15 zoogdieren, 4 vogels, 4 schildpadden, 2 salamanders en een pad. Het
stroomgebied van de Mekong loopt door Cambodja, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam en de
zuid-Chinese provincie Yunnan. ¨We dachten dat dit soort ontdekkingen alleen nog beschreven
stond in geschiedenisboeken. Dit bevestigt het belang van natuurbescherming in een regio die
zo rijk is aan soorten als het stroomgebied van de Mekong,¨ zeg Johan van de Gronden,
algemeen directeur van het WNF. Met de campagne Wonderen vraagt het WNF momenteel via
televisie, radio, en internet aandacht voor de wonderbaarlijke, maar kwetsbare natuur op aarde.

Covered walkway planned for Chiang Mai

Published: 9/12/2008 at 12:00 AM The Botanical Garden Organisation (BGO) has plans for a 50 million baht canopied walkway at the Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden in Chiang Mai for nature tours.


The 350-metre walkway would be the longest covered walkway in Southeast Asia, acting BGO chief Withoon Karuna said yesterday.

The promenade would be 25 metres above ground to give visitors a better view of the garden and a deeper understanding of the diverse plant varieties housed there. "New attractions for visitors are needed," he said.

The BGO was looking for a design contractor. He expected construction to be completed next year.

It was hoped the new walkway would attract more tourists, with projections that the number of visitors would jump from 300,000 to about one million a year.

The Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden is spread over 6,000 rai in Chiang Mai's Mae Rim district and contains more than one thousand plant species. It is popular with botanists and nature lovers.

The 157-metre long skywalk in Malaysia's Kinabalu national park was built in 1990 - the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. Malaysia recently built another canopied walkway in Luta Bukit Hijau in Kedah state.

The BGO also plans to build a botanical garden for marine plants in the Andaman Sea area.

Mr Withoon said this was planned in response to HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's concern over a dramatic decrease in sea grass and other marine plants in the Andaman Sea. The marine plant house would likely be built in Phangnga or Ranong provinces, he said.

Ltu, laat van zich horen

LTU Er is 4 december gesproken met de stationmanager van LTU. Vandaag, 4 december, vertrekt de laatste LTU-vlucht vanaf U-Tapao en vanaf morgen worden dagelijkse vluchten vanaf Suvanabhumi hervat. Bij stationmanager is geen info bekend omtrent eventuele wachtlijsten van passagiers naar Duitsland. Alle boekingingen/wijzigingen dienen via kantoor LTU Duitsland te verlopen.
Uw vlucht is vervallen, dit hebben we de afgelopen dagen al veel gehoord, uw vlucht is pas 14-12 en echt niet eerder, maar weer ons nummer in Duitsland bellen.
Ltu laat van zich horen, na bellen met Duitsland, contact met de ambassade en opnieuw contact met Duitsland en lopen naar het kantoor op SilomRoad, want onze vlucht was op 29-11-2008 retour Dusseldorf, worden we na drie dagen weinig slapen gebeld door medewerker AirBerlin dat we op de wachtlijst staan om terug te vliegen naar .... via U-tapao.We hebben net intrek gedaan in HelloGuesthouse in Bangkok, alweer extra kosten, en na een half uur slapen krijgen we te horen, dat we om 03.00 in het HolidayInn op Silomroad moeten verschijnen, alwaar we met Touringcars(hadden echt geen busreis geboekt) naar Pattaya gebracht worden waar we in een zeer luxe resort ingecheckt worden voor onze vlucht terug.

Inchecken in een zaal van een luxe resort, Ravindra in Pattaya/Jomtien blijft toch een raar gevoel, op zoek naar lijsten met je naam met bijbehorend nummer en dan met je nummer naar twee lange tafels waar medewerkers je een handgeschreven instapkaart overhandigen.( dit in de wereld van computers).
Ook worden hier je bagagelabels aangereikt die je zelf aan je bagage bevestigd, waarna je bagage op een paar open vrachtwagentjes geladen, en daar een paar uurtjes kunnen bakken in de opkomende zon.


Zelf gaan we ook op zoek naar een lekker plekje in de opkomende zon aan het strand


want inmiddels 06.00 moeten we nog een paar uurtjes wachten om weer in onze favoriete touringcar te stappen(10.00) die ons naar U-Tapao, het omgebouwde militaire vliegveld te brengen.


Na een rit door kleine dorpjes arriveren we op de voormalige vliegbasis(door de Amerikanen gebouwd tijdens de Vietnamoorlog), bij het uitstappen van de bus belanden we op een Foodplaza, gesponsord door een veelvoud van Thaise bedrijven, snel iets te bikken pakken(for free) en op naar de vertrekhal, lijkt alsof de tijd stil is blijven staan. Geen grote depatureschermen of monitoren maar stukken papier met je vluchtnummer om je door de immigration te loodsen naar Gate....
Het is wel goed te weten dat er vanaf de 26-11 versoepelde visaregels gelden want anders had 3/4 van de passagiers wel een aantal dagen boven de 30 dagenvisa kunnen betalen, en elke dag langer kost je vanaf 2006 toch 500 baht, ongeveer 10 euro en een aantekening in je paspoort.


En dan eindelijk het LTU vliegtuig in zicht, alweer een busje in om je naar het toestel te brengen.
De vliegtuigtrap..... en iedereen ploft in zijn stoel, normaal te krap en net niet goed maar voor eenieder nu toch een prettig gevoel.
Rondvraag bij passagiers, sommige drie dagen onderweg, 1000 kilometers gereisd, twee dagen te laat naar huis of langer en anderen toch in Pattaya geweest ondanks belofte aan eega hier nooit heen te gaan, zelf geregeld of door LTU gepland, ondertussen kunnen velen vertellen over hun trip naat Thailand en hier zeker weer terug te komen voor een vakantie naar een van de perfecte plekken op aarde, Thailand, en door andere gebieden echt niet te evenaren.

Passengers visiting the temporary check-in counter at the Bitec Convention Centre said they'll come back again, despite the political ructions.
However, they were unhappy with the seizure of the city's airports by the People's Alliance for Democracy and called on the government to prevent such incidents happening again.
The Airports of Thailand (AoT) opened a 24-hour check-in centre at the convention hall on Monday to serve foreign passengers stranded by the closure of Suvarnabhumi airport.
The airport resumes full operations today after the PAD ended its week-long seizure on Tuesday. The temporary centre was to close at 3am today.
Passengers checking in at Bitec were told to get there at least seven hours before departure time since some flights take off from U-tapao airport in Rayong province.
Despite the lengthy process and flight delays, foreign travellers said they understood the situation and most said they would come back here.
"Yes, I will return to Thailand because the country and the people are nice," Tohiro Takahashi, 34, said.
Mr Takahashi, a production officer at Siam Aisin, a Prachin Buri-based auto parts factory, was waiting for a flight to Narita airport in Japan.
He arrived at the check-in counter in late afternoon, for a flight leaving at midnight.
He said the PAD's seizure of the airport had hurt Japanese firms with business interests in Thailand, not just the local economy.
Bastiaan Vette, 33, from the Netherlands, said the airport closure caused him difficulties but would not deter him from coming again.
"Politics is politics. Tourism is tourism," he said.
Mr Vette and his girlfriend arrived in Thailand three weeks ago for a holiday.
They were lucky and took a flight to Krabi last Tuesday only three hours before the PAD laid siege to the airport.
However, they still had an 11-hour bus ride back from Krabi to Bangkok to catch their flight to Amsterdam last night.
Mr Vette said authorities should provide better security at the airport to make sure it is not occupied again.
Toni Reynolds, 25, an accountant from London, was frustrated because the protest delayed her flight to Britain by 24 hours.
Rene Schmidt, 33, an engineer from Denmark, was also unhappy with the PAD.
"I've never experienced a situation like this before anywhere in the world. It affected my business," he said.
Aviation experts from agencies including the Aviation Department and the US Transportation Security Administration yesterday made safety inspections of Suvarnabhumi airport at the AoT's invitation.
AoT acting president and Suvarnabhumi airport director Serirat Prasutanont said Suvarnabhumi airport was ready to resume full commercial operations for domestic and international flights.
Thai Airways International (THAI) said passengers can check in at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports from 6am today.
Don Mueang airport reopened for domestic flights yesterday, with the first flight, operated by THAI, leaving for Ubon Ratchathani province.
An initial inspection found a hole in the glass wall of the passenger terminal, caused by a grenade fired into the building from an M79 launcher early Tuesday morning that killed one protester and injured 24 others.
Bolts on some doors inside the terminal were also damaged.

Suvarnabhumi international airport will celebrate a technical return to full operation on Friday, His Majesty the King's birthday, despite major concern abroad over security breaches.
Suvarnabhumi will be "open for full services including check-in and immigration" at 11am Friday, Airports of Thailand chief, Serirat Prasutanont declared in a statement.
But airline officials and ambassadors of many of Thailand's closest allies were seriously concerned about security problems, especially at Suvarnabhumi.
Bangkok-based ambassadors of Australia, Canada, the European Union, Japan, Korea, New Zealand and the United States signed an unprecendented protest letter about the vulnerabililty of the airport to security and terrorism threats.
We "urge the government of Thailand to take all necessary measures to improve the protection and security of all Thai airports," said the protest.
Airline representatives said they were "under enormous pressure to open - from the airport authorities, from stuck passengers, from shareholders, from the tourist industry. But our genuine security concerns are being ignored."
There were two separate concerns. The first was the ease of the airport takeover last week by armed protesters of the People's Alliance for Democracy.
"What if they were armed terrorists?" an airline official was quoted as asking by the Reuters news agency.
The second problem is the unseemly haste in resuming airport operations. Suvarnabhumi officials say that the mob did not tamper with runways or departure gates - but they do not specifically know that.
There also has been only cursory inspection at best of tower and information systems which were directly occupied and accessed by the protesters.
The airport siege by the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) group lasted one week stranding more than 300,000 travellers. Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways, Singapore Airlines, China Airlines and Japan Airlines have put in requests to resume service, the airport chief said.Representatives from the International Civil Aviation Organisation, the International Air Transport Association and foreign embassies will visit the airport on Friday to check on the safety and security of the airport.An initial inspection found no damage to taxiways, runways and key systems because the PAD demonstrators occupied only the front area of the passenger terminal, according to Civil Aviation Department chief, Chaisak Angsuwan. Many people are now shifting their attention to the King, who has cancelled the traditional royal audience on Thursday night, the eve of his 81st birthday, because he is "slightly ill".The nation had hoped His Majesty would give guidance for ending the country's political turmoil, but now is worried about the health of the monarch.(BangkokPost.com)

3 December, 13.00 uur - einde bezetting Suvarnabhumi
Bezetting van Suvarnabumi wordt thans beeindigd. Laatste info is dat op vrijdagmorgen te 00.01 uur (verjaardag Koning) de eerste internationale vlucht zal worden uitgevoerd vanuit Suvarnabhumi-airport door Thai Airways naar Rome. Het inchecken van passagiers zal echter nog op BITEC gebeuren (Convention-center op Bang Na) waarna passagiers met de bus naar de airport worden gebracht.
Wanneer de vluchten vanuit Suvarnabhumi-airport g e h e e l hervat wordt, is thans nog niet duidelijk. Er zijn veel tegenstrijdige berichten hierover. Op basis van onze informatie vanuit de airportautoriteiten zelf moet u er voorlopig van uitgaan dat het nog 5 tot 7 dagen zal duren vanaf nu voordat de situatie weer geheel genormaliseerd is. Hierbij is ook van invloed dat IATA (International Air Transport Association) naar verwachting ook systeem- & security-checks zal gaan uitvoeren voordat internationale vluchtverkeer weer volledig operationeel kan zijn.

De aankondiging volgde op een uitspraak van het constitutionele hof, die regeringspartij PPP schuldig heeft bevonden aan verkiezingsfraude. De partij moet volgens het hof worden ontbonden en premier Somchai Wongsawat moet opstappen. Hij mag bovendien de komende vijf jaar geen politieke functie uitoefenen.Anti-regeringsbetogers houden al maanden blokkade-acties. Die begonnen op het regeringscomplex in Bangkok, en zijn later uitgebreid naar de vliegvelden. Tienduizenden buitenlandse passagiers zijn daardoor gestrand. Hoewel de acties worden beëindigd, zal de internationale luchthaven nog zeker tot 15 december gesloten blijven om de zaak weer op orde te brengen.Politici van regeringspartij PPP hebben overigens aangekondigd dat ze verder willen regeren en dat er een nieuwe partij wordt opgericht. Volgende week zou er een nieuwe premier moeten worden gekozen. Premier Somchai legt zich neer bij het vonnis van het constitutionele hof.

Due to protesters occupying the international airport in Bangkok, the airport has been temporarily closed since 21.00 h local time on 25th November. Currently it is not possible to operate flights to and from Bangkok.The flights operated by Air Berlin’s subsidiary LTU have been cancelled until 5th December 2008 inclusive.

Air Berlin has already deployed four planes to bring back passengers from Bangkok by flying them from Utapao (south of Pattaya) to Germany. This also involved Air Berlin arranging buses to take passengers from Bangkok to Utapao.

Air Berlin passengers will need a confirmed new flight booking for these special flights. The regular return flights from Bangkok to Düsseldorf until 5th December inclusive are no longer valid. Thai AirAsia on December 2 will operate 22 rescue flights originated from its three hubs outside Suvarnabhumi Airport to ferry stranded guests to various destinations across Asia starting from 2 December onwards. Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok has remained closed, and guests will alternatively fly through the U-Tapao Airport, Chiang Mai Airport and Phuket Airport. Bangkok Airways will operate twice daily flights between Hua Hin and Samui during December 3rd - 7th, 2008 in order to help relieve the load of passengers at Utapao Airport and connecting passengers to Singapore and Hong Kong via Samui Airport.

Prime Minister John Key said Tuesday he was not satisfied airlines would be able to evacuate the New Zealand tourists stranded by increasingly violent protests at Bangkok's two main airports. An air force Hercules was expected to leave New Zealand late Tuesday and could be used to shuttle tourists from a Thai air force base east of Bangkok to Singapore or Malaysia. The exact number of stranded New Zealanders was not known but it could be up to 300, he said. The government would decide within two days whether the Hercules would fly on to Thailand to evacuate the tourists. "But if there's a large number who want to leave, and the standoff continues between the warring factions, then our view is we would like to deploy and get New Zealanders out," Key said. The Hercules would only be able to carry 65 people on each flight but two air force Boeing 757 passenger aircraft, each capable of taking 160 passengers, are both out of service for maintenance and upgrading.
British Airways repatriates customers from Bangkok
British Airways is urging its customers to call the local number 02 627 1701 to register their details, as the airline is finding ways to repatriate them from Bangkok.The airline said in a statement issued on Tuesday December that it is working with the oneworld alliance partner, Qantas, to explore a number of options to help the airline's customers to leave Thailand. It is also making preparations for when it is able to fly back in to Bangkok airport."In the event that we are able to offer relief flights or we are given clearance to resume flights, we will contact all customers who have registered with us in order to rebook them onto services. We can understand how frustrating the circumstances are and would ask our customers to bear with us. SAS continues to bring customers back from Thailand SAS Scandinavian Airlines will operate three flights from Phuket toScandinavia in order to bring the remaining stranded passengers back to Europe. Flight SK975, Stockholm-Bangkok, will depart Stockholm Monday night as scheduled at 20.20, but will fly to Phuket airport.
Flight SK973, Copenhagen-Bangkok, scheduled for departure on Monday night, will be postponed until tomorrow morning to avoid congestion at Phuket airport.
Flight SK976, Bangkok-Stockholm, will depart Phuket 02 December. Departuretime is estimated at 14.25, local time. An additional flight, SK6972, will depart Phuket 02 December. Departure timeis estimated at 08.30, local time. Flight SK972, Bangkok-Copenhagen, will depart Phuket 03 December. Departure time is estimated at 00.25, local time.
The airline said as U-tapao airport has now been stretched beyond its capacity, SAS has deemed it is not possible to continue operations at U-tapao airport. SAS flights will instead be operated to and from Phuket in southern Thailand.
Its Airbus A340 that has been stuck at Suvarnabhumi Airport since Monday has now been able to take off from the airport and has arrived in Phuket to commence traffic back to Scandinavia. Thai Airways International will operate 32 special flights for passengers with confirmed reservations on Friday.

Passengers must have confirmation re-routing and rescheduling at THAI offices, before checking in at city terminals at Centara Grand Hotel and Bitec. At Bitec, passengers must check in at least 7 hours before departure. THAI will check in for passengers and provide transfer from Bitect to U-Tapao Airport in Rayong.

Qantas would operate a second relief flight between Phuket and Singapore early Wednesday December 3.
The Chief Executive Officer of Qantas, Alan Joyce, said the airline would operate its first special relief flight, also between Phuket and Singapore, tonight local time. It will operate a special 297-seat A330300 service tonight between Phuket and Singapore, and a second flight will now operate early Wednesday morning local time.
Passengers on these flights will be bussed from Bangkok to Phuket and then be booked on first available Qantas and British Airways flights to Australia and the UK.
Joyce said Jetstar would also operate its scheduled Melbourne-Bangkok service tomorrow via Phuket, with passengers bussed between Phuket and Bangkok, and continue to operate its scheduled threetimesaweek Sydney-Phuket services.
"These three special flights will provide around 900 seats out of Thailand," Mr Joyce said.
"We will continue to closely monitor the situation and look at adding more capacity if necessary."
Until further notice, Qantas' scheduled Bangkok services will continue to operate via Singapore.

Thailand's small private airline, PB Air, has temporarily stationing its aircraft, the maintenance crew as well pilots and cabin crew at Hua Hin Airport from December 1, 2008.
The airline has been contacted by several airlines as well international charter companies to bring passengers to the various destinations.
The fleet of PBair consists of two modern Embraer ERJ145LR regional jets with an all economy seat capacity of 50 passengers. The reach of those aircraft is 1,550 nautical miles thus regional destinations such as Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore can be serviced.

(Novum/AP) - Het Thaise hooggerechtshof heeft de ontbinding gelast van de twee grootste partijen uit de regeringscoalitie van premier Somchai Wongsawat en de premier en enkele tientallen partijfunctionarissen verboden zich de komende jaren met de politiek te bemoeien.
De uitspraak betekent het eind van Somchais regering, die vanaf haar aantreden massale tegenstand heeft ondervonden van een deel van de bevolking.
Het hof oordeelde dat Somchais Volksmachtpartij en de Machima Thipatai partij zich schuldig hebben gemaakt aan verkiezingsfraude. Somchai Wongsawat en 36 kopstukken van de partij werden eveneens schuldig bevonden en mogen vijf jaar lang geen politiek ambt bekleden, bepaalde het hof.
De gerechtelijke uitspraak wekt hoop dat duizenden antiregeringsbetogers hun bezetting van de twee belangrijkste luchthavens van het land zullen beëindigen.
Met de uitspraak wordt een 'politieke norm' vastgesteld, zei de voorzitter van het hooggerechtshof, Chat Chalavorn.

Thaise premier accepteert uitspraak
(Novum/AP) - De Thaise premier Somchai Wongsawat aanvaardt de uitspraak van het hooggerechtshof dat hij moet aftreden wegens verkiezingsfraude die zijn partij heeft gepleegd. Dat heeft hij tegen verslaggevers gezegd in de noordelijke stad Chiang Mai.
De uitspraak is 'geen probleem', zei Somchai. ''Ik werkte niet voor mezelf. Nu word ik fulltime burger.''
Somchai brak een kabinetszitting af nadat het hooggerechtshof in Bangkok de ontbinding van de drie belangrijkste regeringspartijen had gelast. Het hof oordeelde dat Somchais Volksmachtpartij, de Machima Thipatai partij en de Chart Thai partij zich schuldig hebben gemaakt aan verkiezingsfraude. Somchai Wongsawat en 36 kopstukken van de partij werden eveneens schuldig bevonden en mogen vijf jaar lang geen politiek ambt bekleden, bepaalde het hof.

Information for passengers travelling to and from Bangkok
Due to the occupation of the international airport in Bangkok, the airport was temporarily closed at 21.00 h local time on 25th November. Currently it is not possible to operate flights to and from Bangkok. The flights operated by Air Berlin’s subsidiary LTU have been cancelled until 29th November inclusive.
The flights scheduled to take off today from Berlin-Tegel and Düsseldorf have also been cancelled.
Air Berlin will be flying two empty aircraft to Utapao (south of Pattaya) to bring the passengers originally booked on the flights from Bangkok back to Germany from there. The LTU flight to Berlin is due to take off from Utapao at 13.30 h local time on 29.11. ; the LTU flight to Düsseldorf is due to take off at 17.30 h local time, also from Utapao.
Air Berlin will lay on buses to take passengers from Bangkok to Utapao.
Air Berlin is looking after the passengers affected by this event locally and is keeping them informed of any further developments.

Na de eerste vlucht van KLM (vandaag 1 december), zal op 2 december een Air France toestel vertrekken, waar ook reizigers met KLM-ticket in principe mee kunnen (en van Parijs zullen doorreizen naar A'dam). U dient daarvoor naar het KLM-kantoor te gaan. Adres: 20ste verdieping Vorawat building, 849 Silom Road. Het kantoor is de gehele dag geopend. Houdt rekening met een lange wachttijd. U ontvangt een nummer. De KLM heeft meegedeeld dat de bussen naar Phuket gedurende de nacht van 1 op 2 december zullen vertrekken, vermoedelijk rond een uur of 4 's-nachts. U krijgt details bij reservering op het KLM-kantoor. De bedoeling is, zo stelt KLM, dat KLM en Air France om de dag vanaf Phuket een vlucht naar Europa zullen afwisselen.
Voor reservering dient u contact op te nemen met KLM-kantoor in Bangkok. De website van KLM zal hopelijk spoedig worden aangepast. KLM verzoekt KLM passagiers niet op eigen houtje naar Phuket te reizen. GEEFT U DEZE INFORMATIE OOK DOOR AAN MEDEPASSAGIERS VAN KLM.

Update 1 december, 11.00 uur
Ambassademedewerker bezocht op 30 november 2008 Utapao airport gelegen op ongeveer 180 km zuidoostelijk van Bangkok. Op het vliegveld heerste een chaotische toestand met een enorme mensenmassa buiten de vertrekhal. Slechts mondjesmaat werden er mensen in de vertrekhal binnengelaten. In de vertrekhal was slechts 1 bagagescanner en 4 incheckbalies. Er was nauwelijks ruimte om te bewegen. U wordt derhalve afgeraden op de bonnefooi, zonder reservering naar Utapao te reizen. De eerstvolgende Eva-air vlucht naar Amsterdam vanuit Utapao is op 2 december 02.30 uur.

EU wil beëindiging acties Thaise vliegvelden Uitgegeven: 29 november 2008 12:19 BANGKOK - De Europese Unie heeft actievoerders in Thailand zaterdag opgeroepen een eind te maken aan de acties bij twee vliegvelden in de hoofdstad Bangkok, waardoor meer dan 100.000 mensen zijn gestrand.
In een verklaring stelt de EU dat het imago van Thailand door de acties ernstig wordt beschadigd.


De ambassadeurs van de EU-landen in Thailand vroegen de partijen in het Aziatische land te zoeken naar een vreedzame oplossing voor de crisis.
Bezet
Aanhangers van de oppositiepartij Volksalliantie voor Democratie (PAD) houden het internationale vliegveld Suvarnabhumi bezet. Ook blokkeren ze de toegang tot de oude luchthaven Don Muang.
De PAD vindt dat de regering veel te nauwe banden heeft met Thaksin Shinawatra, een oud-premier die twee jaar geleden door het leger werd afgezet.

Confrontatie

In de afgelopen weken waren er enkele shermutselingen tussen aanhangers en tegenstanders van Somchai. De PAD vindt dat de regering te nauwe banden heeft met de wegens belangenverstrengelig veroordeelde Thaksin.
Vliegvelden
De Thaise politie heeft de duizenden actievoerders bij de twee vliegvelden in de hoofdstad Bangkok opdracht gegeven onmiddellijk te vertrekken. Samenscholingen van meer dan vijf personen zijn verboden, aldus de politie. Een politiechef las op het oude vliegveld Don Muang een verklaring over het samenscholingsverbod voor.
Hij liet zich niet uit over de maatregelen die de politie gaat nemen als de betogers het verbod aan hun laars lappen.
Bezet
Aanhangers van de oppositiepartij Volksalliantie voor Democratie (PAD) houden het internationale vliegveld Suvarnabhumi bezet. Ook blokkeren ze de toegang tot Don Muang.
De PAD vindt dat de regering veel te nauwe banden heeft met Thaksin Shinawatra, de oud-premier die twee jaar geleden door het leger werd afgezet.
KLM
De KLM stuurt zondag een vliegtuig naar Thailand om gestrande toeristen op te halen. De Boeing 747-400 is in eerste instantie bestemd voor mensen die een vlucht bij KLM of Air France hadden geboekt.
Een woordvoerster van de KLM heeft een bericht daarover in De Telegraaf bevestigd. Zij kon nog niet zeggen waar het toestel maandag in Thailand zal landen.
De vlucht is bestemd voor mensen die zich bij de ambassade van hun land in Bangkok hebben gemeld. Op de lijsten van de ambassades staan nu tweehonderd tot 350 mensen die de vlucht bij de KLM of Air France hadden geboekt. In de Boeing is plaats voor ruim 420 passagiers.
Ambassade
Negenhonderd Nederlanders die zijn gestrand in Thailand, hebben zich gemeld bij de Nederlandse ambassade. Dat bleek zondag uit informatie van de ambassade. De diplomatieke vertegenwoordiging raadt Nederlanders die zich nog niet hebben geregistreerd, aan om dat alsnog te doen.
Het cijfer van 900 geregistreerde Nederlanders is volgens een woordvoerder van het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken niet keihard, omdat het kan zijn dat mensen die inmiddels al zijn vertrokken, zich niet hebben afgemeld.
De woordvoerder verwacht dat het aantal gestrande reizigers dat weg kan, zal afnemen. KLM en China Airways, die evenals EVA vanaf Schiphol naar Bangkok vliegen, zetten namelijk toestellen in om mensen op te halen. Aan de andere kant melden zich ook nog steeds nieuwe toeristen bij de ambassade op het moment dat hun vakantie in Thailand is afgelopen.
Air Berlin
Vrijdagavond landde in Düsseldorf in Duitsland al een vliegtuig van Air Berlin uit Bangkok. Dat meldt één van de Nederlandse passagiers zaterdagmiddag aan NU.nl. Volgens de man waren er ongeveer tien Nederlandse passagiers aan boord. De passagiers zijn met bussen naar het U-Tapao vliegveld gebracht.
Ongeveer 100.000 reizigers zijn gestrand op de vliegvelden in Bangkok. De Spaanse regering heeft laten weten dat het zondag drie vliegtuigen naar Thailand stuurt om de ongeveer zeshonderd gestrande Spanjaarden op te halen.

8:45 PM: How can the police practically remove more than, say, 50,000 anti-government protesters out of the Suvarnabhumi Airport? The answer is impossible. In the morning the crowd was estimated at 30,000. But right now it has ballooned to more than 50,000, with the protesters spilling into the check-in areas.
First, the police do not have enough manpower. Second, the police do not have the expertise to handle a large mob of this kind. Third, the protesters are in a better location than the police because they can always run for shelter inside the vast terminal.
To evict the protesters out of the airport, the police need to outnumber them. It is not easy to mobilise a huge police force to counter the protesters. Now the police can come up with at most 2,000 officers. This is the very first handicap.
Somchai Wongsawat, the prime minister, no longer trusts the military, so he has assigned the police to handle the task of quashing the protesters out of the airport. His relationship with the military is now broken for good. Somchai does not dare to fly on an Air Force aircraft any longer.
The Suvarnabhumi closure is now causing more than 500,000 passengers to get stuck in Bangkok.
But none of the police has the expertise to do the job. Pol Gen Kowit Wattana, the interior minister, will have to exercise more prudence this time. In the October 7 incident, the police started to shoot tear gas into the anti-government protesters in front of Parliament without following any procedures. This resulted in one death and hundreds of injuries.
Since Kowit spent most of his career in the Police Border Patrol, he did not have the experience to handle riots in a big city like Bangkok. The Metropolitan Police Command Centre and another police unit, both headed by friends of Thaksin Shinawatra, tasked to handle the protesters at the airport are equally ill-equipped and have no experience.
To disperse a huge mob, the police normally needs a special command armoured vehicle. The last time the police had this special command armoured vehicle was in the early 1970s, purchased during the time of Police Chief Prasert Rujirawong. The special command armoured vehicle, which looked like a tank, was bought for Bt12 million. It had to be used with fire trucks to spray water canon against the crowd.
The vehicle was use to disperse the student demonstrations during the October 1973 uprising. The students were not afraid to die. They lay on the streets. The driver of this special command armoured vehicle dared not run over the students. It parked like a dead tree with the students surrounding it.
After 12 hours of engine humming, the airconditioner no longer worked. The police officers inside had to escape from the vehicle. The students did not hesitate to burn it down. The police afterward sold the vehicle as a piece of iron junk.
The Thai police forces have never got proper training on how to handle the riots and mob protests. After the October 7 incident, the police now are more obliged to follow the textbook. First they have to use a loud speaker to inform the crowd to disperse. A timing is given. Second, they will move in to quash the protesters by using water canons. Third, they might use tear gas to disperse the crowd and drag them out.
But the Suvarnabhumi Airport is not Sanam Luang. The police can't use fire trucks to spray water into the crowd. It is practically impossible to use water canons at the airport. The protesters can always run into the terminal or stay in different rooms. If the police were to fire tear gas, the protesters can also seek shelter in the rooms or other places.
It would be a big cat-and-mouse fiasco.
After a series of issuing threats, the government has to bite the bullet. Since the government does not want to use the service of the military to quash the protesters, Gen Anupong Paochinda can only say thank you. The military now let the government and the protesters confront each other. The military is now an idle bystander. The equation has changed. When the protesters stormed the airport, they forced the military and the government to confront each other. Now it is no longer the case.
Coup rumours were reached feverish height on Thursday over speculation that the army chief could be sacked. The military were in full alert, ready to take the action.
Later on, the rumours died down. The government decided to sack Pol Chief Patcharawat Wongsuwan alone.
Now the chance of a military coup has disappeared. But if the airport crisis cannot be resolved after Dec 5, then a coup would have to happen inevitably. Somchai is still staying in Chiang Mai.
The military is now focusing on rehearsing a military parade as part of a celebration of His Majesty the King's Birthday. On December 2, all the armed forces will take part in the annual military parade at the Royal Plaza. Their Majesties the King and the Queen also take part in the parade to review the guard of honour.
But on the same day of Dec 2, the Constitution Court will conclude hearings into the party dissolution cases against the People Power Party, the Chat Thai and the Matchima Thipatai Party. It is not sure whether the court will issue the verdicts on the same day.
Even after the expected dissolution of the People Power Party, Somchai and his Cabinet would still carry on as caretaker government. The MPs would migrate to other parties. But Parliament will function as normal.
The Military are now giving time for the government and the protesters time to sort things out. So we should see something on Dec 2. If after Dec 5, they cannot reach any compromise, the Military would have to step in to clean up the mess. It would be messy, messy, messy

Airports of Thailand (AOT), the operator of Suvarnabhumi Airport, yesterday gave the green light to Thai Airways International and other airlines to remove a total of 88 aircraft grounded since last Tuesday.
"We've told every airline that they can remove their stranded aircraft if their pilots are ready," said Serirat Pasutanond, AOT's acting president.
The green light followed lengthy negotiations with leaders of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), who laid siege to Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang
airports, while law enforcement officials have been unable to disperse the anti-government protesters.
PAD is now under heavy pressure to alleviate the situation because 160,000 Thais and foreigners have been
stranded here and abroad due to its unlawful act.
In the first positive development since the start of the airport siege on November 25, Serirat said last night that several aircraft of THAI and other airlines had already left Suvarnabhumi so that they could fly these aircraft to U-Tapao, Chiang Mai, Phuket or other regional international airports to help stranded passengers.
The airport will remain closed until 6pm today due to the presence of protesters, making it unsafe to reopen the airport.
Meanwhile, Pramong Suthiwong, chairman of Thailand's Board of Trade, yesterday urged the government to re-open Suvarnabhumi Airport as soon as possible because the damage from its closure is now "incalculable".
Dr Olarn Chaipravat, the deputy premier in charge of economic affairs, will today hold an urgent meeting with Pramon and other private sector executives to discuss the situation.
Leaders of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, Federation of Thai Industries, Thai Bankers Association, and Tourism Council of Thailand will also join the meeting.
The private sector said an extended closure of Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports would also severely damage the country's international reputation, while the recovery process will take more than one year.
Pornsilp Patcharinkul, a senior executive of the Board of Trade, said fresh food, orchids, electronics, jewellery and other exporters are badly hit by the airport closures with damage estimated to be around Bt3 billion per day.
Fresh fruit and vegetable exporters could not do their business because they needed to use cold storage facilities at Suvarnabhumi Airport, he said.
The private sector is not sure how long it would take to reopen the airports as a reopening will likely require certification from the international aviation body for safety reasons.
Somkiat Anuraj, vice chairman of the Board of Trade, said it may take more than one year to fix the country's international image if the forced closure of airports lasted more than a week.
"Thai exporters will lose lots of business opportunities as buyers will turn to other countries. Unfortunately, this is happening during the peak export period as lots of orders are received in November and December," he said.
Santi Vilassakdanont, chairman of Federation of Thai Industries, said the government may have to use part of the additional Bt100-billion fiscal budget to revive tourism, aviation and export sectors hit by airport closures.
For example, there could be special travel packages for domestic tourists to help operators in tourism, hotel, restaurant and related sectors cope with the business downturn as the number of foreign visitors is likely to drop sharply.
At this stage, foreign arrivals could have plunged to just 7-8 million next year down from the 13-14 million arrivals, resulting in a major loss of jobs in tourism and related sectors.
Tourism and other services currently account for 40 per cent of Thailand's GDP.
Kosit Panpiemras, executive chairman of Bangkok Bank, said yesterday that if the airport closure is longer than 1-2 weeks, businesses will be hit hard.
Pairoj Vongvipanond of Dhurakij Pundit University, said Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat would likely step down or dissolve Parliament to end the crisis, while Pasuk Phongpaichit of Chulalongkorn University said there should not be another coup.
Meanwhile, Thailand Development Research Institute has projected that economic growth will be only 1.9 per cent for 2009, compared with an estimated growth of 4 per cent this year.

BANGKOK (Reuters) – Restarting Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport will take at least a week from the end of the current sit-in by protesters because of security and IT system checks, airport general manager Serirat Prasutanond said on Monday.
"Normally, checking the IT systems takes one week. We have to check, recheck, check, recheck," Serirat told Reuters, adding that the delay would be even longer if any of the airport's massive computer systems needed repair.
"I think some systems are damaged," he said, but he declined to provide further details.
Once Airports of Thailand, the site's operator, was satisfied that everything was working as it should, it would invite the Department of Civil Aviation and airline representatives to do their own checks, Serirat said.
It is not known how long those third-party checks will take.
The closure of the $4 billion, 125,000 passenger-a-day airport since Tuesday has stranded thousands of foreign tourists and is threatening the tourism- and export-driven economy with billions of dollars of damage.
The misery is being compounded by the parallel closure by protesters of Bangkok's Don Muang airport, which served as the capital's main air hub until Suvarnabhumi's opening in September 2006 and is still important as a domestic hub.
Serirat did not talk about Don Muang.
Some international flights are now departing via U-Tapao, a Vietnam War-era military airfield 150 km (90 miles) southeast of Bangkok.
The other options for travelers trying to get flights out of the country are via Chiang Mai, 700 km (435 miles) to the north, or Phuket, 900 km (560 miles) to the south.
Some are also driving overland to Cambodia to get flights out of Siem Reap or Phnom Penh.
