Voor de highspeedtrein in Thailand.....
Rail passengers in Thailand can stillexperience unique journeys before the high-speed train system is launched
Hundreds of passengers quietly hang around Bangkok's Hua Lamphong station. Some have waited for so long that they decide to sit on the floor because all the benches are occupied. Maids take a break and enjoy chatting in a quiet corner, out of their supervisor's sight.
The free train to Hua Hin leaves Bangkok at 9.20am every day. On the way, food vendors sell various items such as grilled beef and sticky rice, noodles and desserts.
I recheck the timetable displayed on the gigantic LCD monitors. Train number 261, from Bangkok to Hua Hin in Prachuap Khiri Khan will depart in five minutes. However, it is not on the platform yet. More and more passengers gather on the empty space.
It finally arrives, two minutes before the scheduled departure time. As soon as the train approaches, passengers do not wait until it completely stops, but clamber on board and occupy all the seats within a couple of minutes.
This is a free train; a welfare offered by the government so people can enjoy free transport along certain routes and at certain times. The free service is available for those in third class only.
The car is old and dirty. Some seats are torn, the electric fans on the ceiling no longer work and the sun shades are heavily stained.
But I do not have many choices. I spot an empty seat, opposite the toilet, which is why nobody wants to take it. Though the seat smells, it is better than standing all the way to Hua Hin.
Riding a train in Thailand is a unique experience. Passengers may find themselves travelling back in time on old-fashioned locomotives and cars, mostly along the single-track railway system. Old locos and the 1m-wide gauge do not allow the train to go fast, normally at less than 80kph.
It is surprising that it is quite easy to find something to eat on the train. Seconds before it departs, vendors come on board, walking up and down the aisles, offering the likes of grilled beef with sticky rice, soft drinks, meat balls and fruits.
Moreover, at major stations, you can expect more vendors getting on board with new offerings such as egg noodles at Nakhon Pathom, and local sweets at Phetchaburi station.
Eating then taking a nap is likely the best way to kill time during the journey, which most passengers love to do. As my seat is close to the toilet, I can hardly fall asleep due to its strong odour. Indeed, the smell should not be this bad because the toilet does not have a sewage tank. Sewage is released directly onto the tracks. That is the reason why it is forbidden to use the toilet when the train stops at a station. Regardless, nobody seems to care about this regulation.
Smoking in the car is also forbidden, but smokers manage to enjoy a cigarette on the gangway between bogies, which is a metre away from the other passengers in the car.
Who knows, such a laid-back atmosphere may be difficult to find in the next five years when the country's high-speed train system begins operation.
Thailand's high-speed train project is about to kick off soon, on five routes from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Nong Khai, Ubon Ratchathani, Rayong and Sungai Kolok in Narathiwat.
The project will be developed in two phases on long routes.
In the first phase, the service will be available to Phitsanulok, Nakhon Ratchasima and Hua Hin. According to the plan, high-speed trains will run at 250kph.
Though it will not run as fast as those trains that can be found overseas, which travel at 300kph or more, it will be an interesting choice for travellers, particularly on long routes.
From Bangkok to Padang Besar, the journey will only take five hours compared to the current 20 hours.
The journey time from the capital to Chiang Mai will be cut down to 3 hour and 45 minutes.
I imagine Chiang Mai people hopping on the morning train to downtown Bangkok and enjoying lunch before shopping or attending an important meeting, then making their way home in the evening. Holiday-makers from Bangkok can be in Hua Hin within an hour to enjoy the beach, then head home after dinner.
A station porter rings the bell. The passenger announcement wakes me up, loudly informing everyone on board that the train has arrived in Hua Hin, after 4 hours and 30 minutes.
A new group of passengers rush in to occupy the seats and the vendors follow in their wake

Thaise Guirlande, Veilig rijden.

(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santikhiri)

Hua Hin is to get an upmarket shoppingmall.
Hua Hin has long been one of Thailand's most popular holiday seaside destinations. The small beach city in Prachuab Khiri Khan has grown rapidly over the past 25 years and now plays host to as many as five million visitors a year. But something is missing: a department store, according to the owners of The Mall Group.
The leading retail group decided to set matters rights by introducing its Bt4 billion project the "Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall", which it is building in partnership with construction company Prayoonwitt and the InterContinental Resort Hua Hin.
At the project's contract signing ceremony held recently at the InterContinental, Supaluck Umpujh, vice president of The Mall Group, revealed that the new mall would be built on a 25-rai plot in the heart of Hua Hin opposite the InterContinental.
"Residents shouldn't be alarmed," Supaluck said. "The Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall has been designed to blend in with the heritage and charm of this well-preserved
dream destination architecturally and culturally. This shopping centre aims to complete Hua Hin."
The shopping centre will offer lifestyle, fashion and luxury products along with technology gadgets and also be home to hip restaurants, a gourmet market, and entertainment venues including cinemas and the "Splash Play Port" water park. It will also include a new five-star hotel under the InterContinental Hotel chain to be developed by the Proud Group.
"Jaraspim Liptapanlop, the president of Prayoonwitt, is the mother of my good friend, Suwat Liptapanlop, veteran politician and former deputy prime minister," she explained. "The Mall Department Store at Bang Khae and Nakhon Ratchasima are doing incredibly and one of the reasons is that the Liptapanlops introduced me to such terrific locations. When I see Suwat's daughter, Proudpud, (an Oxford graduate and chairman of Proud Resort Hua Hin), who will manage this project with me, she
reminds me of myself when my father pushed me into this profession at the age of 23. So I hope to train her, the best way I can," said a smiling Supaluck.
Proudpud added that she was pleased to have been given the opportunity at this stage of her career path, and as the third generation of Liptapanlop family, she had every confidence in the success of the project.
The event was attended by a number of high profile executives and future tenants of Bluport, among them Dr Vichit Suraphongchai, director and chairman of the executive committee of Siam Commercial Bank, Chartsiri Sophonpanich, president of Bangkok Bank, Suphachai Chearavanont, president of True Corporation, Paiboon Damrongchaitham, president of GMM Grammy, Dr Boonkiat Chokwattana, president of ICC International plc, Ampornpim Vajarabhaya, managing director of ELCA ltd, Guillaume Sauzin, managing director of Chanel Thailand, Olivier Dubos of Christian Dior, Somchai Songwattana of Flynow, Bhanu Inkawat of Greyhound, Catherine Maleenont and Achara Burarak,
The shopping centre is scheduled for completion in 2015.

Condos continue to attract Thai, foreign buyers to Hua Hin
The Nation October 12, 2012 1:00 am
Hua Hin remains an attractive condominium market for second homes. Hua Hin and nearby Cha-am are as bustling as ever, with several condo projects launched by leading developers.
Most buyers and guests come from Bangkok. Only 25 per cent come from overseas, including expatriates in Bangkok, according to Knight Frank Chartered (Thailand) Co.
Surasak Limpa-arayakul, director of research and valuation, said yesterday that starting from 2003, the condo supply in Hua Hin had risen to 17,349 units by the first half of this year. During the same half last year, 3,956 condo units were added to the Hua Hin and Cha-am supply.
More than 75 per cent of the Hua Hin condo buyers are Thais, especially those from affluent Bangkok-based families. There are also some expatriates and foreign retirees buying beach condos.
The reliability and reputation of the developer tends to be the most important factor for expatriates, while an affordable price seems vital for foreign retirees.
Foreign buyers, unlike those in other tourist destinations such as Phuket and Samui, are mostly retirees or have Thai spouses. They have a limited budget and prefer to buy a residence for their own use as a second home during their country's winter.
As foreign-ownership regulations in Thailand have become more stringent, foreigner buyers are paying more attention to freehold condos, at up to 49 per cent of the total ownership. They are likely to search for an inland condo that is cheaper than a beachfront unit.
The historical take-up during the peak year for Hua Hin condos has been about 1,000-1,200 units per year. However, during the first half of this year, about 1,655 units were sold. However, with the influx of new supply, growth in demand cannot keep up, causing the take-up rate to drop from 45 per cent in 2011 to 44 per cent during the first half of 2012.
Hua Hin condos used to be sold easily, especially those in beachfront projects or projects with sea views. Recently, the inland condos have garnered interest, with compact sizes and affordable prices.
The cumulative average growth rate (CAGR) of beachfront condos in southern Hua Hin was 4.2 per cent from 2010 to the first half of 2012, with an average price of Bt138,010 per square metre. Those with limited budgets can select sea-view condominiums in Cha-am with an average price of Bt92,404 per square metre. However, the price will be lower for units farther from the beach.
