Hua Hin Rampgebied
De provincie Prachuap Khiri Khan heeft de districten Hua Hin, Sam Roi Yot, Kui Buri en Thap Sakae tot rampgebied verklaard. Meer dan 500 huishoudens zijn de dupe van de hoge golven die op de kust beukten. Het reddingswerk wordt bemoeilijkt door de harde wind. In Hua Hin zijn enkele strandwinkels en –stalletjes weggespoeld. Toeristen en bewoners is geadviseerd niet te gaan zwemmen.

Locals panic as menacing waves and winds lash some southern provinces
In Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Hua Hin district, two to four metre-high waves struck the coastline. Many shops and fishing boats docked behind a breakwater were damaged.
Khao Takieb village experienced unusually high tide. Seawater has flooded houses and roads as deep as 10-30 cm within Hua Hin municipality.
Villagers said the weather has fluctuated, as there is normally no strong wind or wave in December. Sea water has not risen to flood the areas for many years. (MCOT online

Wil jullie even deelgenoot maken van een krantenberichtje en een foto. Heel toepasselijk. Gisteravond hadden we in het reataurant aan zee, van te voren al een tafel besproken. Wat vorig jaar mis is gegaan, ging nu goed. we kregen een tafel langs het strand. We hebben echt zitten vernikkelen van de kou.Een van de heren uit het gezelschap is gaan vragen of, als er een grote tafel vrij kwam in het midden, we daar dan mochten zitten. Nu wilden we graag en vorig jaar was het ongewild. Dat lukte voor het hoofdgerecht. Het scheelde denk ik 8 tot 10 gr. in temp., afhankelijk van waar je zat. Het is ongekend. Vadaag wat boodschappen gedaan en toen ik op straat kwam, moest ik goed op mijn benen blijven staan-wat een beetje wankel is nog- om niet omver geblazen te worden. Iedereen loopt met jacks en vesten aan. In de stad aangekomen en tussen de bebouwing is het best aangenaam. In ieder geval veel beter als op mijn balkon. Als ik hier zo zit, lijkt het Nederland wel. De wind giert verschrikkelijk. Het zeewater staat tot ruim halverwege de trap waar we af moeten als we naar het strand gaan. Dat is ca. 2-2,5 meter hoog. Hoorde gisteren de opmerking van een van de heren die vaak langs het strand gaat wandelen, dat hij alleen gewend is aan zulke hoge golgen van de Noordzee.
De kerstdagen is het echt bar en boos. Ben benieuwd hoe lang dat nog duurt.

The southern provinces on the Gulf coast are being hammered by massive storm waves and strong winds, and Deputy Prime Minister Yngyuth Wichaidit has been put on charge of providing emergency help.
Huge waves had washed away a kilometre of beach in Prachuap Khiri Khan's Thap Sakae district, reports said on Monday. An area about 50 metres wide and a kilometre long had been been taken by the sea.
Waves three to four metres high had destroyed many houses and buildings along the coast. Fishermen were forced to stay ashore and a fish sauce plant was starting to cave in.
The furious assault on the coastline was generated by a ridge of high pressure from China.
In Nakhon Si Thammarat's Pak Phanang district, the powerful waves have inundated many houses, forcing residents to evacuate to safety.
Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said Mr Yongyuth will visit southern Thailand to assess the situation and provincial governors can use the emergency budget to help people affected by the waves.
She said authorities will have to continue closely monitoring the coastal situation in the South.
The emergency warning database needed improvement and the appropriate agencies had to work in a more integrated manner.
Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department chief Wibul Sanguanpong said strong waves and storms had damaged houses and public utilities in eight districts in four provinces -- Chumphon, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Surat Thani.
Mr Wibul said his department had been cooperating with other units to provide assistance the residents along the coast and inspected damaged houses to estimate the cost of repairing them.
People affected by the waves can call the department's 1784 hotline for immediate assistance around the clock, he said.
The national army chief, Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha, said the army will work with other agencies to help affected people along the coast.
High waves hit many seaside southern provinces yesterday, spreading panic among locals who were reminded of the 2004 deadly tsunami.
In Chumphon, waves ravaged hundreds of houses and strong winds uprooted many trees. Some local fishermen lost contact with others after sea conditions turned hostile.
Acting on behalf of Lang Suan district chief, senior assistant district officer Apinya Khondee ordered the evacuation of affected people.
Elsewhere, the big waves and strong winds also caused panic.
"I've never seen such big waves before," said Fon Yangnoi, a 60-year-old resident in Prachuap Khiri Khan's Sam Roi Yot district.
He was speaking after the waves, between two and four metres high, ravaged seaside restaurants and shops along the coastline.
"The waves were so high and the winds were so strong that they were frightening," Hua Hin Beach Shop Club chairwoman Somprapa Morakan said.
She said she had already instructed shop-owners to move their stuff out of their seaside structures as a precaution. "It has been forecast that the rough weather conditions will continue for a few more days," Somprapa said.
She said the shops would be closed until the weather conditions returned to normal. Her club has overseen shops stretching along the Hua Hin beach from the Hilton Hotel to the Sofitel Hotel.
Wanchai Iam-udom, a 62-year-old fisherman, was convinced that the waves were the highest in the province since Typhoon Gay hit more than two decades ago.
"It's dreadful because the waves have already broke three small fishing trawlers," he said.
Jim Daeng Restaurant owner Krissana Yoojan said the waves crashed onto the shore and damaged her place.
"The electrical appliances were submerged and ruined," she moaned.
The Meteorological Department had warned in advance that the sea would be rough in the Gulf of Thailand.
"We don't know why it has happened. Never before has seawater flooded our homes," Jirapat Poonsem said. He is a local resident of Khao Takiab Village in Prachuap Khiri Khan.
Local resorts have reported adverse impacts from the big waves, too.
Prachaup Khiri Khan Governor Weera Sriwattanatrakoon said he had already inspected the damage caused by the waves.
"People living along the 220km coastline in Prachuap Khiri Khan should be on alert and stay abreast of weather news," he said.
He warned tourists against playing in the sea. However, he said tourists could still come and visit the province as usual.
"We have an early-warning system in place," he said.
Pinnart Jarernphon, who heads the Tourism Authority of Thailand's Prachuap Khiri Khan branch, said the conditions would be rough for just a few days.
"There's no need to panic," she said. "It's just a natural phenomenon."
Fon of the Prachuap Khiri Khan, however, was really worried. "My parents told me Nature would punish human beings for damaging the natural environment. That's why we are seeing deadly disasters like flooding, earthquake and tsunami."
Locals in Nakhon Si Thammarat and Pattani also reported yesterday that high waves had been threatening their homes.
On December 26, 2004, giant tidal waves hit Thailand's coast for the first time, killing thousands of people and shocking the whole country.
Many events will take place today in the tsunami-hit provinces to commemorate that tragedy. A seminar on disaster-preparedness will be held in Phuket.

LOPBURI Feestmaal voor apen
Een aap drinkt zondagmorgen cola uit een blikje tijdens het Monkey Buffet Festival bij de Thaise Prang Sam Yod-tempel in de stad Lopburi, 150 kilometer ten noorden van Bangkok.
Het festival wordt elk jaar gehouden op de laatste zondag van november om het toerisme te promoten. Lopburi staat bekend als de apenstad. Tijdens het festival krijgen de apen een banket van groente, zoetigheid and softdrinks. Daarmee willen de bewoners de apen bedanken voor de welstand in de stad als gevolg van het toerisme. De apen zorgen trouwens ook voor overlast: ze trekken antennes van de daken en stelen fruit van marktlooplui.

Sam Phan Nam Floating Market Hua Hin
While it has a distinctly retro feel, Hua Hin Sam Phan Nam Floating Market in Prachuap Khiri Khan province is actually a new market, which opened earlier this year. Inspired by the designs of many outstanding landmarks located around Hua Hin, the market’s setting provides a glimpse into the past, while offering tourists the chance to browse among an array of stalls, selling souvenirs and local specialties. Covering an area of over 100 rai (16 hectares), about six kilometers away from the center of Hua Hin, the market was designed by a company that established the renowned Ayothaya, the largest retro market in Ayutthaya province. The market, which is managed by the same company (Ayothaya Floating Market), is named after Sam Phan Nam (‘3,000 names’), an extremely long creek nearby that runs through numerous local villages.
The market’s architectural features take their inspiration from several historical sites in Hua Hin that were either built or renovated during the reign of King Rama VI (1910-1925), including the Mrigadayavan Palace and Hua Hin Railway Station. The large red and white sign in front of the market, for example, is based on the same color scheme as the railway station and road signs around the city.
Appetizing Options
The market features a large pond, where up to 40 boats are moored. The vessels are used as stalls by local vendors, who sell a range of mouthwatering local foods and snacks. These scenes will take many visitors back to the not too distant past, when travel by boat was the principal form of transportation in the kingdom. Surrounding the man-made pond are about 200 stores, offering a wide variety of goods, such as local snacks and food, including fruits, as well as items of clothing, home decorative products and souvenirs. To provide visitors with lots of photo opportunities, the market includes lots of vintage-style attractions, including phone booths, post boxes and a small post office, which is operational, allowing shoppers to post a card or letter to a friend or family member from the market.
There’s also a miniature train that operates a circuit around the market, as well as a boat offering a short trip around the pond, providing passengers with some different perspectives of the market. Passengers pay just 20 baht (US$0.64) per ride, per attraction. An unusual form of stage lies just below the surface of the water towards the center of the pond, providing members of the audience with an interesting view. The position of the stage means that it can be seen from just about anywhere, while the performers can often seem to be walking or gliding upon the water, providing members of the audience with some incredible sights. Among the performances taking place on a daily basis are Thai traditional dance, traditional drumming and fire dances.
The market opens daily from 10 am to 7 pm.

Drank en sigaretten worden schaars in Thailand
Wij verblijven al sinds 27 oktober in Thailand, natuurlijk zijn de gevolgen zichtbaar van de overstromingen in Bangkok, maar van schaarste in de schappen, ja bepaalde merken zijn niet leverbaar vanwege transportproblemen omdat de distributiecentra in of vlakbij de getroffen gebieden liggen, is door het gehele land niets te merken. Sommige Tesco's & 7eleven's hebben wat out of stock maar dat is niet minder dan bij een AH of C 1000 op zaterdagmiddag wanneer het opeens mooi weer schijnt te worden.

Thailand heeft al enige weken te kampen met de ergste overstromingen sinds tientallen jaren. Weliswaar zijn de vakantieparadijzen in het zuiden van het land niet door overstromingen getroffen maar toch doen zich daar inmiddels wel problemen, die het gevolg zijn van het hoge water, voor. Met name in en rond de vakantieresorts op Phuket is er een schaarste aan levensmiddelen, bier en sigaretten aan het ontstaan.
Grote delen van de hoofdstad Bangkok staan nu al weken onder water, en een duidelijke verbetering van de situatie lijkt nog niet in zicht.
Driekwart van het land heeft te maken met de overstromingen en ondanks dat het zuiden tot op heden verschoont is gebleven van deze problemen, zijn de indirecte gevolgen nu ook in plaatsen als Ko Samui, Khao Lak en Phuket voelbaar, zo schrijft het Duitse Bild.
Want ook al ligt de geliefde badplaats Phuket op het gelijknamige eiland meer als 700 kilometer van de haard van de crisis verwijderd, het wordt voor de plaatselijke ondernemers steeds lastiger om voldoende levensmiddelen, drank en sigaretten aan te voeren voor de vele toeristen die er alles bij elkaar verblijven.
Op dit moment is het tekort overigens nog niet echt merkbaar in de grote luxe hotels, maar doet de schaarste zich al wel voelen in de kleine winkeltjes en bars. Het gaat dan met name om zaken als: alcoholische dranken, sigaretten, rijst en mineraalwater.

Computer tot 50% duurder door waterellende Thailand
Laptops, notebooks en andere elektronica die met een harde schijf werken, worden binnenkort 40 tot 50 procent duurder. Dat is een direct gevolg van de overstromingsramp in Thailand.
De wereldwijde productie van harde schijven zit grotendeels in en rond de Thaise hoofdstad Bangkok geconcentreerd en die fabrieken staan haast allemaal onder water. “In amper twee weken tijd zijn de prijzen van harde schijven bijna verviervoudigd”, zegt Xavier Cabes van 2by2, een Antwerpse grootdistributeur die onder meer aan Fnac levert.
“Bijkomend probleem is dat wereldspelers als Western Digital en Seagate voorrang geven aan hun grote klanten. Waardoor distributeurs en computerwinkels nauwelijks nog beleverd - geraken.” De situatie laat zich stilaan ook voelen in de prijzen van consumentenelektronica.
“Momenteel hebben we nog geen prijsverhogingen doorgevoerd. Maar dat wordt in de toekomst onvermijdelijk. Bij de nieuwe leveringen van laptops houden we rekening met prijsverhogingen van minstens 40%”, klinkt het bij warenhuisketen Makro.
Op gespecialiseerde websites als alternate.be en tones.be zijn de prijzen van harde schijven nu al omhoog geschoten.

Inner Bangkok passes danger point
GIS expert Dr Anond Snidvongs in a daily NBT flood analysis noted that innner Bangkok has passed danger point as today is the last day of high tide.Bangkok North sees reduced water volume at Khlong Rangsit, Bang Pa-in.
Present flood in Laksi and Khlong Prapa resulted from leaks. Government is erecting new barrier at Lak Hok.
There is no more danger from water mass from the North. In the next 3-4 days, high tide will be significantly less and government/BMA can drain even more water which will see flood level in Rangsit decline slowly.
BMA tries to divert floodwater from Don Mueang and Phaholyothin through Khlong Lat Phrao and Saen Sap.
Floodwater from Lak Si will be absorbed at Khlong Bang Khen and will not reach Chatuchak area.
If new barrier at Lak Hok is finished tomorrow, flood at Chaeng Wattana will stabilise and gradually dry up.
Government will try to protect Khlong Prapa from floodwater.
Irrigation Department must finish all breached sluice gates/walls along Chao Phraya river so that all the flooded areas in Nonthaburi can be siphoned off to Chao Phraya river. This should be finished before Loy Kratong.
If a few leaks in the North are fixed, Chaeng Wattana can be dry within one week.
Lat Krabang, Nong Chok, Minburi were originally planned as floodway to be drained off. But this no longer work as people settle there and object to rising water.
To placate angry residents, the government decided to raise sluice gate at Khlong Samwa but this would pose threat to Khlong Saen Sap residents. Expect to see rising water in low-lying areas. But this would not pose threat to industrial estates.
In the next few days, Froc has to be careful about Bangkok North and the west. The west still sees rising threat while the North and East pose less threat.

Nederland leeft weer in wintertijd
RIJSWIJK - In de nacht van zaterdag op zondag is een einde gekomen aan de zomertijd en is de wintertijd begonnen. Om 03.00 uur gingen de klokken een uur terug waardoor de zondag 25 uur duurt in plaats van de gewone 24 uur.
In 2012 gaat de zomertijd weer in op 25 maart. De wintertijd is eigenlijk de standaardtijd. Die duurt vijf maanden, van de laatste zondag van oktober tot de laatste zondag van maart. Zomer- en wintertijd werden voor het eerst ingevoerd in 1916. Vanaf het begin van de Tweede Wereldoorlog gold lange tijd alleen de standaardtijd. In 1977 werd het onderscheid weer ingevoerd.
De herinvoering in de jaren '70 was een reactie op de oliecrisis. Door in de zomer langer gebruik te maken van het zonlicht, wordt energie bespaard. Als de zomertijd ook in de winter zou gelden, dan zou het rond de jaarwisseling pas rond 9 uur 's ochtends licht worden.
In Thailand geen wintertijd maar wel lege schappen in de supermarkt, flessen water minimaal te verkrijgen of in het geheel niet.
Hua Hin heeft te kampen met een grote invasie van Bangkokianen die in verband met de watersnoodramp 5 dagen vakantie hebben verkregen van de overheid. Aangezien Hua Hin de 2e verblijfplaats is (iedereen heeft hier wel een vakantiehuisje of een bekende met een appartement in deze badplaats) heeft men besloten om hier wat dagen te verblijven.
Tesco, normaal een volle hypermarkt heeft hier ook geen rekening mee kunnen houden want bestellingen komen maar mondjesmaat binnen omdat de distributiecentra's te kampen hebben met de overstromingen in de regio Bangkok.
Suvarnabhumi airport authorities are confident they can handle the flood crisis but a team of Japanese safety experts remains concerned about its power supply sustainability, which is key to flood drainage.
Wing Cdr Suk Puangthum, Suvarnabhumi airport's deputy general manager for maintenance, was confident that its 23.5km-long dyke could keep water out of the 32 sq km airport area.
The dyke has been increased in height to 3.5m above mean sea level from the previous level of 3m, Wing Cdr Suk said.
The canal outside was now only 0.8 metres above sea level.
He added there were two reservoirs, each only at 25% of its full capacity of 4 million cubic metres.
Senior airport technicians briefed two senior Japanese officials _ Michio Higashijima, director of international affairs for airport planning and construction at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and Norifumi Yoshida, chief of airport engineering for the MLIT Civil Aviation Bureau _ who flew in from Japan to support flood-prevention efforts. They were also taken on an inspection tour.
The Japanese embassy's economic minister, Masato Otaka, said the Thai government had asked the two experts to look at how the airport could cope with the floods.
The experts told reporters after the two-hour briefing and inspection of Suvarnabhumi airport's pumping stations, reservoirs and power stations that authorities were well prepared, but the flood crisis was not something that could be precisely predicted. They needed more time to study the details, and particularly the blueprint of the airport layout.
Asked if they were concerned about the internal power supply, the experts said the airport's strategic flood-prevention system was the dyke, and any water trickling into the airport could be pumped out.
"If the electrical control centres malfunction due to water leaking into the system and the pumps cannot get rid of the water fast enough, the power supply might be affected," they said.
Amnuay Sarachart, Suvarnabhumi's vice-president in charge of the electrical and mechanical department, said the airport has been given the same priority as Siriraj Hospital, where His Majesty the King is staying.
Executive vice-president and deputy general manager Narongchai Tanadchangsaeng said the dyke would make the airport an island when there is flooding. However, he conceded that if water levels top the dyke, there would be damage.
Meanwhile, railway experts from the Japan International Cooperation Agency's disaster relief team advised the Mass Rapid Transit network (MRT) to focus on four aspects in defending the subway system.
Tokyo Metro's Yoshio Otsuki and Masamichi Ono said the MRT should pay attention to the station entrances, air vents, train tracks and connections to buildings.
After seeing the MRT's defence system, they were confident the stations could withstand floods.
Ronnachit Yaemsa-ard, MRT's deputy governor for operations, said the agency installed floodboards in risk zones and closed some entrances in the red zones.
Mr Ronnachit said the floodboards were designed to withstand floods of up to 3.5m above sea level. The government predicts a maximum level of 1.75-2m. The air vents are not a concern since they are five metres above street level, he said.

Het hoogwater in Bangkok heeft vandaag bijkomende stadsdistricten bereikt en dorpen langs de Chao Phraya-stroom tot een meter overstroomd. Het voor de avond aangekondigde hoogste waterpeil passeerde de regio echter zonder dramatische wijzigingen aan de situatie. De dammen langs de stroom en in het noorden van de stad hielden stand.
gety Aan beide oevers van de Chao Phraya klotste het water echter over de dijken waardoor vele straten onder water kwamen te staan. Ook het koninklijk paleis, een van de toeristische topattracties van de Thaise hoofdstad, werd getroffen. Het hoogwater bereikte een recordstand van 2,48 meter boven het normale peil, zei de woordvoerder van het stadsbestuur. De zeven kilometer lange waterdammen aan de Chao Phraya zijn 2,50 meter hoog. Het centrum van Bangkok met banken, hotels en winkels is voorlopig niet getroffen. Daar bleven de straten droog.
Binnenstad blijft gespaard
Regeringsleidster Yingluck Shinawatra toonde zich voorzichtig optimistisch, dat de binnenstad van Bangkok gespaard blijft van de gevreesde grote overstromingen. De situatie in de hoogwatergebieden in Centraal-Thailand is duidelijk verbeterd, zei ze op de radio. Daardoor wordt ook de druk van de dammen genomen, die Bangkok in het noorden beschermen. Richting oosten vloeit het water weg in de kanalen en overstroomt voorlopig geen grote stadsdelen. Indien de dammen het tot 6 november uithouden, is het ergste voorbij, aldus het waterbestuur.
Belangrijke weg
Op de westelijke oever van Chao Phraya is de toestand kritieker. In de wijk Thon Buri klotste niet alleen vloedwater uit de stroom in de diepergelegen straten. Ook de kanalen die het vloedwater uit het noorden richting zee leiden, liepen deels over. "Dat heeft deels tot grote overstromingen geleid", zei de woordvoerder. Een van de hoofdverkeersaders is volledig overstroomd. Daar heeft de marine een pendeldienst met boten ingericht om gestrande mensen op het droge te brengen.
Vervuiling
In Thon Buri zal de waterbevoorrading beperkt worden. Op enkele plaatsen zal nog slechts zes uur per dag water uit de kranen vloeien. Het wordt echter steeds moeilijker voor de medewerkers om op het werk te geraken, aldus het crisiscentrum.

The flooding in Thailand is mainly affecting the central provinces along the Chao Phraya River including Bangkok and Ayutthaya. Other popular tourist destinations in the central region including Pattaya, Hua Hin, Kanchanaburi and Ko Chang have not been affected by the floods. Flood waters in several provinces in northern Thailand have begun to subside. Provinces in the south of Thailand have not been affected by the floods.
Most areas of central Bangkok where tourists normally go are not flooded. The Chao Phraya River, which runs through Bangkok, is at a higher-than-normal level. This is causing some flooding at tourist attractions that are close to the river.
In the greater Bangkok Metropolitan Area, several suburbs and areas adjacent to the Chao Phraya River are experiencing flooding. As these areas are largely residential and industrial zones, they are not normally visited by tourists.
The TAT advises visitors to contact the TAT Information Line at 1672; check the latest reports in the local media; or get an update from the staff of the accommodations where they are staying if they are planning to visit tourist attractions that are located close to the Chao Phraya River.
Transportation:
Tourist destinations in the north, such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Sukhothai, are best accessed by air as some roads and railways in the central provinces are closed due to the floods. Provinces in southern and eastern Thailand remain fully accessible by road and train.
Tourists planning to travel to areas affected by the floods are advised to check the latest weather forecasts for their destination and confirm arrangements with the transportation providers with which they will be travelling. Buitenlandse Zaken ontraadt niet-essentiële reizen naar binnenstad Bangkok
De Nederlandse ambassade in Bangkok raadt Nederlanders af tot en met 2 november naar de binnenstad van Bangkok te reizen.
Dit advies is ter kennis gebracht van de Calamiteitencommissie, die daarna moet vaststellen of sprake is van een uitkeringsvatbare situatie. Een mail met deze strekking is gestuurd aan alle 3500 geregistreerde Nederlanders.
Ambassadeur Joan Boer verklaart desgevraagd dat, vooruitlopend op de beslissing van de Calamiteitencommissie, de toeristen in overleg met hun touroperator moeten proberen hun programma te wijzigen, voor zo ver zich dat afspeelt in de binnenstad van Bangkok. “Veel bestemmingen in Thailand, zoals Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, Krabi, Pattaya en Koh Samui, zijn normaal (en via de lucht) bereikbaar. Ik hoop daarnaast dat airlines de komende dagen ook inschikkelijker zullen zijn bij het omboeken van tickets”, stelt Boer.
De tekst van het advies luidt als volgt:
Door een opeenvolging van kleinere breuken en water dat op enkele plekken ook over de top van waterversperringen en dijken heen komt of zal komen, verslechteren de vooruitzichten voor de Bangkok binnenring sneller dan verwacht.
lhoewel niet levensbedreigend betekent het dat ook in het centrum van Bangkok de kans op wateroverlast en daarmee samenhangende verschijnselen als stroomstoringen de komende dagen sterk toeneemt. Hoeveelheden en locaties zijn niet exact aan te geven.
Niet essentiële reizen naar het centrum van Bangkok, de Bangkok agglomeratie en het gebied ten noorden van Bangkok tot en met Ayutthaya worden daarom vooralsnog tot en met 2 november ontraden.
De situatie in de overige toeristenplaatsen in Thailand is normaal en deze zijn ook over de weg merendeels goed bereikbaar. Ook het internationale vliegveld van Bangkok Suvarnabhumi blijft normaal opereren en is vanuit de stad bereikbaar. Van dit vliegveld vertrekken ook de vluchten naar binnenlandse bestemmingen waar de situatie zoals gezegd normaal is. Het centrale laagland houdt voorlopig last van overstromingen en wateroverlast. De zwaarst getroffen gebieden op dit moment zijn de provincies Pathum Thani, Ayuhtthaya, Nonthaburi en Nakhon Sawan. Nederlanders die van plan zijn om naar of via deze provincies te reizen, adviseren wij vooraf contact op te nemen met de reisorganisatie of het hotel om na te gaan wat de situatie ter plekke is en of gebruik kan worden gemaakt van bus- en treinverbindingen.

Met de aanhoudende overstromingen suggereren we dat Nederlanders die woonachtig zijn in Thailand en in de zwaar getroffen gebieden verblijven, een paar minuten de tijd te nemen om na te gaan of men voldoende voorbereid is. Het is belangrijk rekening te houden met mogelijke stroomuitval. Op die momenten kunnen ATM machines uitvallen. Het is daarom raadzaam de komende periode over voldoende contant geld te beschikken om een paar dagen te kunnen overbruggen. ‘Overstay‘ De Thaise Immigratie Autoriteiten beslissen per geval de verzoeken van buitenlanders die vanwege de wateroverlast niet tijdig hun visum voor Thailand kunnen verlengen. Nederlandse assistentie
De ambassade heeft vanwege de overstromingen Nederlandse kennis en expertise aangeboden. Samen met het Nederlandse kennisinstituut Deltares zijn een tweetal projecten aangeboden:
1. beschikbaarstelling van een Nederlandse ingenieur voor 3 weken aan het emergency center van de Thaise regering en
2. een studie voor een middel- en lange termijn aanpak van de overstromingsproblematiek.
De Nederlandse deskundige heeft jarenlange ervaring in o.a. Bangladesh, Brazilië, Colombia, Hong Kong, Singapore en Thailand. Hij is inmiddels begonnen en zal de Thaise regering adviseren betreffende directe maatregelen om de waterstromen te beheersen en de schade waar mogelijk te beperken. Het tweede project is een studie voor een Masterplan gericht op een integrale aanpak van de waterproblematiek (zowel beheersen waterstromen, reservoirs als irrigatie). Door de betrokken instituten wordt een ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ met de Thaise regering onderhandeld

Met de aanhoudende overstromingen suggereren we dat Nederlanders die woonachtig zijn in Thailand en in de zwaar getroffen gebieden verblijven, een paar minuten de tijd te nemen om na te gaan of men voldoende voorbereid is. Het is belangrijk rekening te houden met mogelijke stroomuitval. Op die momenten kunnen ATM machines uitvallen. Het is daarom raadzaam de komende periode over voldoende contant geld te beschikken om een paar dagen te kunnen overbruggen. Nederlandse assistentie
De ambassade heeft vanwege de overstromingen Nederlandse kennis en expertise aangeboden. Samen met het Nederlandse kennisinstituut Deltares zijn een tweetal projecten aangeboden:
1. beschikbaarstelling van een Nederlandse ingenieur voor 3 weken aan het emergency center van de Thaise regering en
2. een studie voor een middel- en lange termijn aanpak van de overstromingsproblematiek.
De Nederlandse deskundige heeft jarenlange ervaring in o.a. Bangladesh, Brazilië, Colombia, Hong Kong, Singapore en Thailand. Hij is inmiddels begonnen en zal de Thaise regering adviseren betreffende directe maatregelen om de waterstromen te beheersen en de schade waar mogelijk te beperken. Het tweede project is een studie voor een Masterplan gericht op een integrale aanpak van de waterproblematiek (zowel beheersen waterstromen, reservoirs als irrigatie). Flooding in Thailand
Over the past several weeks, seasonal rains that are heavier than usual have resulted in widespread flooding in Thailand. While the flooding is having some impact on tourism, most key tourist destinations and attractions throughout Thailand have not been affected by the floods and almost all remain open. The floods are mainly affecting the provinces in central Thailand and a few provinces in the north and northeast. Provinces in the south of Thailand have not been affected by the floods. Ayutthaya has been the only tourist destination widely affected by the floods, while other provinces where tourists generally go have been slightly impacted.
Major tourist destinations such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Sukhothai, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Pattaya, Ko Chang, Rayong, Phuket, Krabi, Trang, Ko Samui, and all provinces in southern Thailand are experiencing normal weather conditions.
All airports in Thailand, including Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, have not been affected by the floods and are operating as per usual. Suvarnabhumi Airport has considerable flood protection measures in place and officials are monitoring the situation closely.
Tourist destinations in the north, such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Sukhothai, are best accessed by air as some roads and railways in the central provinces are closed due to the floods. Provinces in southern and eastern Thailand remain fully accessible by road and train.
Train services from Bangkok to northern destinations are suspended due to the tracks being flooded. The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is offering full refunds on tickets for travelers who want to cancel their trips to destinations where train service is suspended. Train services to other parts of Thailand are available as per normal.
The National Disaster Warning Centre has issued a warning for some provinces in the south of the possibility of flash flooding due to heavy rains expected from October 19th to 21st. This includes Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung and Songkhla.
Tourists planning to travel to the provinces affected by the floods are advised to check the latest weather forecasts for their destination and confirm arrangements with the transportation providers with which they will be travelling. Tourists can call the TAT Information Line at 1672 to check local conditions, or visit the Thailand Meteorological Department web site at www.tmd.go.th/en for updated weather forecasts.
Major events going ahead as scheduled include:
• The Royal Flora Ratchaphruek Fair 2011 opens in Chiang Mai on November 9th and runs until February 2012
• Phimai Festival, from November 9th to 13th, at Phimai Historical Park in Nakhon Ratchasima province

1.Update for Bangkok
Most areas of central Bangkok where tourists normally go are not flooded and fully accessible. There is some flooding in areas along the banks of the Chao Phraya River due to the high level of water. Within the Bangkok Metropolitan Area, most flooding is occurring in outlying residential and industrial zones.
Most of the flooding now taking place in Thailand is in provinces to the north and east of Bangkok. Almost all of the Bangkok Metropolitan Area is protected by a large network of flood walls, levees, canals and drainage tunnels. The city government is using this network to manage the water flow and minimize flooding in the city.
During periods of intensely heavy rain, there is some localized flooding of certain low-lying streets in Bangkok. These conditions are quickly cleared up by municipal work crews and the city's storm water drainage system.
Some low-lying areas in northern and eastern Bangkok that are outside of the city’s flood protection barriers have experienced rising water, but the flooding is being contained in certain locations.
Day trips and short trips to tourist attractions close to Bangkok, such as Pattaya, Hua-Hin, Damnoen Saduak Floating Marketing in Ratchaburi, and Amphawa Floating Market in Samut Songkhram remain unaffected by the floods and open to visitors. Tourists who would like to visit historical attractions can consider Sukhothai Historical Park in Sukhothai.
2. Update for Ayutthaya
The province of Ayutthaya has been widely affected by the floods. This includes Ayutthaya's inner city island and world heritage sites. Tourist attractions on and outside the island of Ayutthaya have been temporarily closed due to the floods. Due to the disruptions caused by the floods, the TAT recommends that tourists avoid visiting Ayutthaya until the flood water subsides and tourist attractions have reopened.
3. Update for other popular tourist destinations
Information on the impact of the floods is provided for other popular tourist destinations by the following regions within Thailand.
3.1 North
Water levels in some of the flood-affected areas in northern Thailand are subsiding and flood control measures are being relaxed. Most tourist attractions in northern Thailand have not been affected by the floods and are open for visitors. Tourist destinations in the north, such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Sukhothai, are best accessed by air as some roads and railways in the central provinces are still closed due to the floods.

3.2 Northeast

The current flooding is having little impact on tourism as key tourist destinations and attractions in northeast Thailand are not damaged by the floods and remain open.

The International Horticultural Exposition Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2011 organising committee has agreed to postpone the fair and will now be held in Chiang Mai from December 14, 2011 to March 14, 2012 (92 days) due to the ongoing flood crisis.
The event was originally due to begin on November 9 but was later rescheduled to start on December 16. But the Agriculture Department yesterday morning notified Royal Park Rajapruek director Thassanee Srimongkol the new date. The fair had to postponed because of the worrying flood situation in the country, she said.

3 maanden van zware regenval hebben al minstens 356 levens gekost. Ongeveer 113.000 mensen hebben hun toevlucht gezocht in schuilplaatsen. De overheid heeft de distributie van levensmiddelen overgenomen om te zorgen dat ze voor iedereen beschikbaar zijn.
In Bangkok wonen 12 miljoen mensen. Veel bewoners hebben voedsel en flesjes water gehamsterd. Autobezitters hebben hun wagen geparkeerd langs hogere wegen. Tienduizenden militairen en politieagenten zijn opgeroepen om de orde te handhaven.

Toeristen blijven weg uit Thailand BANGKOK - De overstromingen in Thailand hebben gevolgen voor de lucratieve toeristenbranche daar. Dat zeiden verschillende instanties vrijdag.
Volgens The Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) is het aantal nieuwe boekingen 70 procent lager dan gebruikelijk voor deze tijd van het jaar. Sansern Ngaorungsi van het ministerie van Toerisme in Thailand meldde dat momenteel 25 procent van de reizen wordt afgezegd. „Het aantal annuleringen loopt nog op.”
„Niemand wil naar Bangkok komen”, zei de manager van een luxehotel in de stad. „We worden overspoeld met annuleringen.” Terwijl de hotelkamers leeg zijn, staat de hoger gelegen parkeerplaats van het hotel vol met Ferrari's en andere sportauto's van Thaise inwoners.
„Ik vertrouw maar op een vriend in Bangkok, die me vertelt dat het veilig is om te komen. Er is niet veel informatie. Ik heb geen idee hoe erg het daar is”, aldus Marjolijn Salverda (27) uit Nederland, terwijl ze op het vliegveld Suvarnabhumi in Bangkok op haar bagage stond te wachten

In Bangkok Post staat te lezen dat de Thaise regering heeft besloten om het oostelijk deel van Bangkok te gebruiken als overloopgebied. Hierdoor zou het economische en dichtbevolkte centrum van Bangkok bespaart blijven.
Door deze nieuwe strategie zijn zeven districten getroffen door overstromingen: Sai Mai, Klong Sam Wa, Kannayao, Min Buri, Lat Krabang, Bang Khen en Nong Chok. Het vloedwater zal ook nog stromen door Chachoengsao en Samut Prakan om vervolgens te eindigen in de Golf van Thailand.
The Flood Relief Operations Centre (Froc) waarschuwde de inwoners van vijf provincies in het Centrale gedeelte waaronder Bangkok om zoveel mogelijk spullen verhuizen naar hoger gelegen delen.
Minister van Justitie Pracha Promnok, directeur van het Froc, liet weten dat er tijdig gewaarschuwd zou worden als de situatie in die gebieden zou verergeren, zodat de bewoners tijd hebben om te evacueren.
De massale aanwas van nieuw vloedwater is de oorzaak van mislukte pogingen om water te blokkeren met nooddijken in de provincie Pathum Thani. Het water brak door de dijken heen en de overstroming breide zich uit over het gebied bij Pathum Thani. Hierdoor nadert het wassende water de hoofdstad Bangkok.

Muren tegen overstroming luchthaven Bangkok
BANGKOK - Thailand heeft muren van 3,5 meter hoog opgetrokken rondom de internationale luchthaven Suvarnabhumi bij Bangkok, om het te beschermen tegen overstromingen. Dat meldden overheidsfunctionarissen dinsdag. Het vliegverkeer gaat vooralsnog gewoon door.
Zware regenval en overstromingen hebben al aan ongeveer 270 mensen het leven gekost. In buurland Cambodja zijn al zeker 200 mensen omgekomen.
De Thaise premier Yingluck Shinawatra zei dat ,,de situatie ernstiger is dan bij een tsunami omdat een tsunami komt en gaat, maar overstromingen langer duren.''
Een grote hoeveelheid water uit hoger gelegen gebieden zal Bangkok naar verwachting binnen enkele dagen bereiken, terwijl hoogwater de afvoer van het water naar zee bemoeilijkt. Ook wordt zware regenval verwacht.
Zo'n 700.000 zandzakken moeten de miljoenenstad Bangkok beschermen tegen het wassende water.

'26 Thaise provincies rampgebied door overstromingen'
BANGKOK - Thailand is getroffen door de ergste overstromingen in tientallen jaren.

De regering van het Zuidoost-Aziatische land heeft woensdag een derde van al zijn provincies uitgeroepen tot rampgebied.
De afgelopen twee maanden zijn 281 mensen omgekomen door het water en zijn meer dan een miljoen huizen en bedrijven beschadigd geraakt.
.Volgens de regering zijn inmiddels 26 van Thailands 77 provincies zwaar getroffen door het natuurgeweld. Ook naburige landen zijn getroffen. In Cambodja zijn meer dan 200 mensen omgekomen.

Bangkok in geweer tegen water met zandzakken
BANGKOK - Na zwaar onweer proberen de Thaise reddingsdiensten te voorkomen dat Bangkok overstroomt. Zo'n 700.000 zandzakken moeten de miljoenenstad beschermen tegen het wassende water. Dat heeft premier Yingluck Shinawatra gezegd, meldde de BangkokPost maandag.
Het gaat vooral om het noorden en oosten van de hoofdstad met circa 12 miljoen inwoners. Er zijn opvangcentra voor in totaal 10.000 mensen ingericht. Bangkok in de rivierdelta ligt grotendeels zo'n 2 meter boven zeeniveau.
Door zware regenval zijn in Thailand al meer dan 260 mensen omgekomen. 1,38 miljoen hectare landbouwgrond staat onder water. Meer dan 700.000 huizen zijn verwoest of beschadigd.
Sinds juli zijn meer dan 2,3 miljoen mensen in 30 van de 77 provincies die het land telt, getroffen door extreme wateroverlast in het regenseizoen. De schade bedraagt al minstens 2,6 miljard euro.

Trend zelf reizen organiseren zet door
Steeds meer mensen boeken hun vakantie of een gedeelte daarvan niet meer via agenten of reisbureaus maar rechtstreeks via internet. Dat is de conclusie van een door Visa uitgevoerd onderzoek. Daarnaast stellen mensen hun vakantie vaker zelf samen door een keuze te maken uit het aanbod van hotels en tours dat een touroperator aanbiedt. De vraag naar vaste pakket groepsreizen neemt af. Van de 11620 ondervraagden uit 23 landen, waaronder Thailand regelde 47% hun vakantie helemaal zelf, 28% koos uit het aanbod van touroperators aan tours en hotels om zo hun eigen individuele vakantie samen te stellen en 18% koos voor een geheel georganiseerde groepsreis.

Bij overstromingen in Thailand zijn al zeker 244 mensen om het leven gekomen. Al twee maanden regent het bijna onafgebroken. Driekwart van de Thaise provincies heeft last van het water.
Thailand heeft elk jaar van augustus tot oktober te maken met de moesson, die hevige regenbuien veroorzaakt. Dit jaar zijn de regenbuien extreem. Deskundigen noemen het de ergste wateroverlast in tijden. Ze verwachten dat de regenbuien nog zeker tot begin november aanhouden.
Overstromingen
Miljoenen mensen hebben te maken met wateroverlast. De noordelijke stad Chiang Mai is zwaar getroffen. In de hoofdstad Bangkok staat het water op straat 80 centimeter hoog. Bangkok houdt rekening met meer regen, aangezien de stad op het verwachte traject van de tropische storm Nalgae ligt.
Veel akkers zijn ondergelopen, waardoor de Thaise rijstproductie wordt bedreigd.
Werelderfgoed
In Ayutthaya, zo'n 100 kilometer ten noorden van Bangkok, zijn 1700 gevangenen uit een gevangenis geëvacueerd.
Het water in en rond de gevangenis stond zo'n twee meter hoog. Daardoor moesten de gevangenen over een touw klimmen om naar buiten te komen. Volgens de gevangenis was het touw nodig, omdat de stroming in het water te sterk was om via het water te evacueren.

We all know Chiang Mai is the best winter destination, where we chill out in the mild breeze, admire the blue sky and inhale the fragrance of beautiful blooms. This year, it will be even more tempting, as the "Rose of Lanna" is putting on the International Horticultural Exposition: Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2011 from November 9 to February 15.

Sudan's garden, for example, will create true African beauty with giant arabicum socotranum flowers and a safari landscape. Pakistan, with its long history of Mughal Empire, will show off a garden inspired by Islamic philosophy and Mughal history. The Spanish, under national yellow and red tones, will make a small Mediterranean garden for the spectators and weekenders alike.
The Expo is likely to draw the crowds to Chiang Mai to admire African native and desert plants, among them Zebra Grass from South Africa, Spain's Dragon Tree and date palm from Qatar.

Besides the world show of garden, the International Horticulture Expo aims to inspire the visitors with its green and eco-friendly innovations such as growing crops on the roof or indoor "hobby farms". KLM test futuristische passagierscontroles
De KLM en luchthaven Schiphol doen komend jaar mee aan een internationaal experiment met de veiligheidscontroles van de toekomst.

Nieuwe apparatuur kan mensen met een laag risicoprofiel al lopend controleren als ze op weg zijn naar het vliegtuig. Ze hoeven dan hun handbagage of bijvoorbeeld hun schoenen niet meer af te geven om te laten scannen. Een KLM-woordvoerster benadrukte maandag dat de controles voor reizigers met een verhoogd risicoprofiel veel zwaarder worden.
De luchtvaartmaatschappij gaat de reizigers al na het boeken van de tickets indelen in verschillende risicogroepen. Ruim voordat de reizigers aankomen op Schiphol, schat de KLM onder meer op basis van hun persoonsgegevens en reisbestemmingen in wie voor een lichtere of zwaardere controle in aanmerking komen.
Ook de plek waar de boeking is gedaan en eerdere bestemmingen tellen daarbij mee. „Mensen met slechte intenties pikken we er zo sneller uit”, zegt de KLM-woordvoerster. „Ruim voordat mensen komen inchecken zijn al heel veel risico's bekend. Intelligent controleren noemen we dat.”
Het internationale experiment heet Checkpoint of the future. De KLM werkt hierin samen met Schiphol, de marechaussee en de Nationaal Coördinator Terrorismebestrijding (NCTb). De overige partijen wilden maandag niets kwijt over de proef. Het is nog niet bekend wanneer de KLM ermee begint.

Bangkok meest geliefde stad
Bangkok is verkozen tot de meest geliefde stad ter wereld. Op basis van bezienswaardigheden, het aanbod kunst en cultuur, restaurants, shopping en de verhouding prijs/kwaliteit is de Thaise hoofdstad net als in 2010 de best beoordeelde bestemming

Forse groei toerisme Thailand voorspelt

De TAT, het nationaal toeristenbureau van Thailand, voorspelt voor het komende jaar een vermeerdering van het aantal toeristen van meer dan 1 miljoen. Dit jaar zullen er ongeveer 18 miljoen toeristen Thailand bezoeken, wat meer is dan begin dit jaar werd verwacht. Voor volgend jaar worden er 19,5 miljoen verwacht. De campagne " Amazing Thailand" wordt uitgebreid en gaat "Amazing Thailand Always Amazes You" heten. Speerpunten worden o.a. familievakanties, huwelijksreizen, eco toerisme, golfen en medische en gezondheidsreizen.

AIR ASIA wil groeien.
KUALA LUMPUR - Na de megaorder voor tweehonderd vliegtuigen tijdens de Paris Air Show is de honger van AirAsia-topman Tony Fernandes nog niet gestild. Hij heeft plannen om de vloot van zijn luchtvaartmaatschappij te laten doorgroeien tot vijfhonderd vliegtuigen, zo laat hij weten tegenover Reuters. "Ik heb altijd gezegd dat deze airline minstens vijfhonderd vliegtuigen waard is', aldus Fernandes.
Of AirAsia het aantal van vijffhonderd toestellen haalt is volgens Fernandes afhankelijk van hoeveel joint ventures gesloten zullen worden met andere partijen. De focus zal in ieder geval liggen op het short-haul netwerk. AirAsia X, de long-haul tak van de onderneming, blijft vooralsnog relatief bescheiden.
AirAsia bestelde twee weken geleden bij Airbus in totaal tweehonderd toestellen uit de A320-serie. Daarbij ging het om A320neo’s, de gemoderniseerde A320-versie met nieuwe motoren en sharklets aan de vleugeluiteinden. De huidige vloot van AirAsia bestaat uit negentig toestellen, voornamelijk A320’s. Daarnaast heeft de maatschappij nog eens 75 orders uitstaan.
AirAsia speelt nadrukkelijk in op de groei van de luchtvaartmarkt in de thuisregio. Daarbij richt de maatschappij zich niet alleen op thuisland Maleisië, maar ook op omringende landen als Thailand en Indonesië. AirAsia heeft ook plannen om een basis te openen in Singapore.

Het Beursplein in Amsterdam is komend weekeinde in Thaise sferen. Dan wordt voor de zesde keer het 'Thailand Grand Festival' georganiseerd door de Thaise ambassade. Voor reisinformatie over Thailand is het verkeersbureau aanwezig.

Liefhebbers van 'het land van de glimlach' of mensen die nieuwsgierig zijn naar wat het land te bieden heeft kunnen hier hun hart ophalen! UIteraard kun je volop kennis maken met de befaamde Thaise keuken, er is dans, muziek en dans en ook typisch Thaise ambachten – zoals het beschilderen van parapluutjes - zijn op het Beursplein te vinden.

Thai Airways rechtstreeks vanaf Brussel naar Bangkok

BRUSSEL - Thai Airways voegt Brussel aan het routenetwerk toe. Met ingang van 17 november vliegt de Thaise luchtvaartmaatschappij drie keer per week non-stop van Bangkok naar de Belgische hoofdstad. De vluchten zullen worden uitgevoerd met Boeing 777-200ER’s, met plaats voor 292 passagiers. Daarvan kunnen er dertig plaatsnemen in business class.
Tickets voor de route Bangkok-Brussel of andersom kunnen met ingang van juli worden geboekt, zo heeft Thai Airways laten weten. Thai Airways is lid van Star Alliance, de luchtvaartalliantie waartoe ook Brussels Airlines behoort.
De Thaise luchtvaartmaatschappij is niet de enige die vanaf komende winter België met Thailand verbindt. Jetairfly, de Belgische luchtvaartmaatschappij van reisconcern TUI, kondigde vorige maand aan wekelijks vanaf Zaventem naar Phuket en Bangkok te gaan vliegen.

Hua Hin has never been short of tourism attractions. Soon there will be not only one, but two new floating markets in this retreat destination.

Located not far from each other, Hua Hin Sam Phan Nam Floating Market and Hua Hin Floating Market can be found in Soi Hua Hin 112, a short drive from the town's train station.
Owned by different parties, both floating markets will offer tourists an array of food and shopping areas redolent with the ambiance of yesteryear.
According to Hua Hin Sam Phan Nam Floating Market general manager Anusara Dankul, the 200-million baht project occupies a 100-rai plot of land.
"We are experts in developing floating markets and we plan to have five floating markets nationwide," she said.
The market will be managed by Ayothaya Floating Market 2552 Company, which launched Ayothaya Floating Market in Ayutthaya last year. The floating market in Hua Hin is its second project and is now 90% complete.
"We chose Hua Hin because many tourists spend their vacations here and they also have a high purchasing power," Anusara said.
The daily floating market will be launched on July 15 with a traditional Siamese theme recalling the days of King Rama V and King Rama VI. The project will add a second phase within the next six months with a new market section to be built in the style of classical Greek architecture. This section will offer both domestic and international brand name products.
"Our theme will be an East-meets-West concept," Anusara said, adding that besides 200 outlets for food and souvenir shops and 40 boats offering hot meals, there will also be performances four times a day and a train service that will run inside the project as well as a reproduction of the well-known Hua Hin Railway Station.
Tthere will also be outdoor activities such as cable ski service, water screen shows and a paddle boat service to take tourists around the market.
Hua Hin Floating Market, on the other hand, is smaller in size, located on a 40-rai plot of land before its rival's location when you drive to Soi Hua Hin 112.
An initiative by local investors, the market recreates the atmosphere of old Hua Hin with colonial design buildings and will feature more than 130 shops and 30 wooden boats selling hot meals, snacks and beverages. There will also be local performances three times a day, including an elephant show by Hua Hin Safari.
The construction of Hua Hin Floating Market is scheduled to be completed next month and it will open to the public in August.

Ikea looks to hire 500 with job fair
Ikea, the Swedish build-it-yourself furniture chain, is preparing to stage a job open house this month to recruit at least 500 Thai employees to join its first store in Bang Na, says Wasna Nakthaworn, its human resources manager.

The company is now searching for both full-time and part-time staff to work in the store. Managers were recruited in April 2010.
"We are looking for people willing to work under the Ikea Swedish working values of equality and teamwork. People of all ages and education levels are encouraged to apply," said Ms Wasna.
The company said all employees, both part-time and full-time, would receive equal welfare. Salaries for full-time staff will start at 9,000 baht per month, while part-time staff will earn 45 baht per hour.
Ikea Bang Na, which will be one of the five biggest Ikea stores worldwide when it opens, expects to see at least 5,000 applicants at the May 20 recruitment event.
After recruitment, all employees will have to attend a two-month training course before the store is ready for operation on Nov 3 this year.
Ms Wasna said Ikea's working values should allow it to keep employee turnover at 10%, lower than the average Thai turnover rate of 30%.
The company also hopes the mass recruitment event will promote the brand as company research shows only 5% of surveyed Thai consumers are familiar with Ikea.
The company is advertising the open house via newspapers, online sources, job magazines, outdoor media, and van wrapping.
Ikea Bang Na is scheduled to complete structural construction in June and will finish interior decoration by July.

Nederlanders gewond bij jeepcrash Thailand
KOH SAMUI - Bij een jeepcrash op het Thaise eiland Koh Samui zijn zes Nederlanders gewond geraakt. Vier van hen zijn overgevlogen naar een ziekenhuis in Bangkok.
Op een steile bergweg verloor de chauffeur vermoedelijk de macht over het stuur. De wagen crashte vervolgens tegen de muur van een huis. De gecrashte jeep was onderdeel van een safaritocht, waar nog een tweede jeep aan meedeed. Ook daarin zaten zes Nederlanders.
De verwondingen variëren van gebroken benen tot schaafwonden in het gezicht. Twee Nederlanders konden behandeld worden in lokale ziekenhuizen. Vier anderen werden behandeld in Bangkok. Passagiers van de andere jeep hebben hulp geboden aan hun gewonde medereizigers. Bij het ongeluk was een 59-jarige vrouw met haar dochter van 27 betrokken en een man van 63 en een 57-jarige vrouw. Ook twee zussen van 23 en 25 jaar oud zijn betrokken bij het incident.
Het bedrijf dat de safari's organiseert, Buffalo Tours, was niet bereikbaar voor commentaar.
